Don’t be misled by this restaurant’s name – Japan 88 is a Hong Kong Japanese restaurant with a difference. While the menu is packed with Japanese classics and the restaurant’s Shau Kei Wan Man premises give off a distinctly Japanese vibe, Japan 88 is best understood as one of the new crop of Japanese, European and Asian fusion restaurants popping up about town. The Japanese love of seafood is very much present here along Shau Kei Wan Man Street East, but given a twist, with dishes like the spicy, garlicky pan-fried tiger prawns in Spanish style vying for your attention with baked Australian scallops in a Japanese-style golden sauce. Again, fusing European produce with Southeast Asian culinary practice, Japan 88 offers up a huge 1kg roasted Spanish baby lamb shoulder given a special Thai treatment.
